2023 Season Structure Explained

Jeff Ball23 Feb 2023 - 14:27

What to look forward to this year.

The 2023 season gets underway in the coming weeks, with a range of competition and activities taking place through the year.

Professional Game

Starting with the professional game, the highlight of the year will be the return of Dacia Magic Weekend to St James' Park on 3rd & 4th June. All 12 Super League teams play over two days in front of 70,000 people. This is the last time Magic Weekend will take place so it is not to be missed.

Closer to home, Newcastle Thunder will be competing in the Betfred Championship against the likes of Toulouse, Widnes Vikings and, On Magic Friday, former World Club Champions, Bradford Bulls in what promises to be a highly competitive league this year.

Local lads and former Rockets Alex Donaghy and Nathan Clemmitt are part of the first team squad, and a raft of Rockets are part of the Thunder Reserves and Academies, who will be playing against Super League opposition from across the country too.

Grassroots - youth section

This season, the following activities are taking place:

- U8s & U10s - festivals (U6s will be invited too)
- U12s - Friendlies & U12s Cup
- U14s - Friendlies, Cup & 9s Series
- U16s - League, Cup & 9s Series

The minis (U6-10s) will play festival format, on average once a month, culminating in a big festival at Newcastle Thunder before their exciting clash with former Super League side, Toulouse.

U12s and U14s will enjoy regular Development Days at Kingston Park, with the U14s taking part in the North Vs South Origin Series. The U12s Cup Final is one of the final acts of the season on 16th September.

The U16s have a busy season with the Thunder U16s Academy playing throughout the season alongside the regular fixtures, culminating in the Cup Final Day with the U14s at Kingston Park on 8th July and the League Final on 2nd September.

All age groups will be invited to Kingston Park for the Moody's Cup, the biggest festival in the calendar and U12s-U16s will also be able to enjoy a Summer Games Competition in August.

Grassroots - open age

The adult's season opens with a 9s tournament on Sunday 7th May for MND before the league split into two, the Men's Premier and the Men's Championship for a series of home and away fixtures before the League Final on 20th August. Cramlington are joined by Harrow, Wallsend and Edinburgh for what promises to be a challenging season.

There will also be the North East Cup and a NE Origin series to decide full bragging rights.

All fixtures will be updated to the club website and are subject to amendment. Check with your team manager if you have any questions.
